McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge volunteers receive national honor

For the second consecutive year, the McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge has received national recognition for its volunteer efforts.

The 2018 Margot S. Freudenberg National Volunteer Award is being presented to the “Tuesday Crew,” a group that has been serving weekly dinners at the lodge for more than a decade.

Established in 2016, the Freudenberg award was named after the founder of the first Hope Lodge facility in the country. It recognizes individuals or groups for their contributions to the Hope Lodge, which offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay while they seek cancer treatment in another city.

McConnell-Rabb Hope Lodge volunteer Wanda Smith received the award last year.

The Tuesday Crew, which includes volunteers Ronnie Dixon, Elaine Dixon, JoAnn Lewis and Bobby and Patsy Manning, has served about 1,000 meals a year at the Hope Lodge for 13 years. Members contribute more than 2,500 volunteer hours per year.

Greenville’s McConnell-Rabb Hope Lodge, which opened in 2002, is the only Hope Lodge in North Carolina.
