She organized a successful campaign. Now representative-elect Kandie Smith has to organize a swearing-in ceremony while wrapping up her duties as Greenville City Council’s District 1 representative.

Smith, who won the State House District 8 contest on Tuesday, said she will stay on as a council member until the beginning of year, when she can take the oath of office.

State law allows legislators to take their oath of office when the new year begins, a spokesman for the General Assembly’s House Principal Clerk’s office said.

Many legislators hold swearing-in ceremonies in their communities while others wait until the two legislature chambers hold their organizational day, which will be on Jan. 9, the spokesman said.

Smith said she will hold a local ceremony.

“I am going to do something for my people in my district. I want to make sure we celebrate together,” Smith said. “I think this is a very pivotal moment and they have entrusted me in the position and I need to make sure I celebrate with them.”

Until then, Smith will continue her tenure on the City Council which is scheduled to meet on Dec. 10 and Dec. 13.

“I still have work here to do. I want to finish everything I’ve been working on,” she said. “I know I am not going to be able to finish every single thing up — that’s not realistic — but I know my legacy will continue and the work I’ve been working on a number of years, sometimes those things don’t come to fruition until later.”

Greenville City Council members serve two-year terms. Smith’s term does not end until December 2019, so the council will have to appoint a new member.

Greenville City Attorney Emanuel McGirt said council will be given advice on its various options for making the appointment in the near future.
