Backpack giveaway

Several social clubs, motorcycle clubs and car clubs will hold a book bag giveaway and “Back to School Collaboration!” from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Greenville’s Dream Park, 1711 Chestnut St. The event is free and open to the public and will feature a magician, balloon art, face painting and a bounce house. Lifelong learning

ECU’s Lifelong Learning Program for adults 50 and older will host its Fall 2018 kickoff from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday at East Carolina Heart Institute, 115 Heart Drive. This free event will provide attendees the opportunity to meet with instructors, volunteers and program staff. Refreshments will be provided. Call 328-9198.

Auditor presentation

The Grifton Lions Club will host Beth Ward from the N.C. Office of the State Auditor at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 in the church fellowship hall at Grifton United Methodist Church, 437 McCrae St., Grifton. The presentation will provide information on what types of audits the office performs, who the office audits, what is found as a result of an audit and how the findings affect the individual citizens of North Carolina. This non-political presentation is open to the public and will last about 20-30 minutes followed by a question-and-answer period. Hero nominations

Bailey’s Fine Jewelry is accepting nominations on its Facebook page through Aug. 31 for its First Responder Hero Awards. Nine North Carolina heroes will be recognized, one each from fire, law enforcement and emergency medical service in the Raleigh, Rocky Mount and Greenville communities. There is a limit of one entry per Facebook account and a person can only be nominated once. After all submissions are received, Bailey’s selection panel will review the nominations and announce the winners on Sept. 11, National Emergency Responders Day. Winners will receive a medal and $200 gift card in a presentation with the Bailey’s store manager.

Record show

A vinyl record show will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 23 at the Greenville Masonic Lodge, 1104 Charles St. Vendors will be on site selling vinyl records, as well as other musical memorabilia and collectibles. Attendees can buy, sell and trade. Admission is free. For more information call 364-2927.

Shred event

A free shredding event with Super Shred will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 20 at the Council on Aging, 4551 County Home Road. The event is for residential customers only with a five bag/box limit per person (no businesses). Paper clips, staples and thin folders will be accepted, but no three-ring binders please. NRA event

The East Carolina Friends of NRA will hold an evening of fun, raffles and auctions on Sept. 27 at The Rock Springs Center, 4025 N.C. 43 North. Doors open at 6 p.m.; dinner will be served at 7:15 p.m. Ticket prices are $40 per single and $70 per couple.
