Duck Donuts introduces fall doughnut assortment

Duck Donuts is a sweet spot in Greenville. Nestled in Arlington Commons next to Baby Bump, this confections shop cranks out an average of 9,000 doughnuts a week. Open for 12 years with its start in Duck, it now has five stores on the Outer Banks and about a dozen others throughout North Carolina, with additional stores being opened across the country.
Walk into the Greenville store on any given day and breathe in the aroma of sizzling hot, fresh doughnuts and fresh-brewed coffee. Store Manager Maranda Long has been the head of this doughnut shop for nearly three years and enjoys being part of a franchise that delivers not only delicious sweet treats, but smiles too.
The basic Duck Donut is a vanilla-based, cake-style with a soft middle. Pick from 12 coatings including powdered sugar, chocolate, maple, strawberry, lemon, blueberry, peanut butter, glazed, powdered sugar, vanilla or a seasonal flavor. Next, choose your topping. There are rainbow, chocolate and colored sprinkles, shredded coconut, crushed graham cracker, chopped peanuts, Oreo crumbles, chopped bacon or a seasonal topping. The final step is the top drizzle. Choose from raspberry, blackberry, salted caramel, marshmallow, hot fudge or the seasonal drizzle. Here is my favorite part. You don’t have to pick just one of each. Add multiple coatings, drizzles and toppings and pay no additional fee. The possibilities are endless.
Duck Donuts has just unveiled its fall assortment just in time for my favorite season of the year. Choose from 12 fun-named combinations. The fall seasonal icing is the pumpkin icing. Pick up one of the visual and colorful fall assortment menus and select a doughnut that you can enjoy between now and Black Friday. Enjoy a pumpkin-iced doughnut with vanilla drizzle, a glazed doughnut topped with apple, streusel and drizzled with caramel, the French Toast doughnut dipped in maple icing topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon sugar. The fall doughnut lineup pays homage to the flavors that define the upcoming season: maple, pumpkin, apple, caramel and cinnamon sugar.
For my doughnut tasting, I started with a new fall favorite — the vanilla iced doughnut topped with streusel and apples and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. The doughnut was soft and fluffy, and the vanilla icing glossy and creamy. Pair that with a sweet and spiced apple compote-style wet topping with a sugary streusel sidekick. It was like a deconstructed apple pie, a perfect choice for apple lovers everywhere.
The next option I sampled was the pumpkin iced doughnut topped with a vanilla drizzle and dusted with cinnamon sugar. What sets this off is the icing that is thick and spiced made with canned pumpkin. The creamy vanilla and sugar make this taste like a cross between a churro and a piece of homemade pumpkin pie. It was delicious.
The last doughnut I sampled was the East Carolina Pirate-themed doughnut. During football season, Duck Donuts tints its vanilla icing a perfect Pirate purple. The doughnut is topped with purple and gold sprinkles. Duck Donuts also offers a game-day assortment that gives you a full box of Pirate-themed favorites. Just stop by, ask for the pack and add some sweet flavors to your next tailgate meal.
Single donuts cost $1.40, a half-dozen, $7.50, and dozen, $13.50, or choose a bucket load of 18 for $21. OK, so it’s not actually served in a bucket, but that was the initial idea: to serve 18 in a bucket. There was not a bucket that worked, but the name stuck. Duck Donuts also serves a variety of coffees and espresso-based lattes. Fall’s seasonal roasts are a caramel apple butter latte or maple pancake latte. Another fall favorite, the pumpkin spice latte, is available all year long.
Little Duckling doughnut holes and coffee by the bucket are also available.
One of my favorite things about Duck Donuts is that it takes part in charity that supports local hospitals. In September, patrons can donate $1 or more toward the Gabe’s Chemo Duck Program, operated by the nonprofit organization, Gabe’s My Heart. Based in Nashville, Tenn., the program is designed to help child life specialists and medical professionals offer education and comfort to children and families going through cancer treatment.
All the money raised goes to purchase $30 stuffed Chemo Ducks. Children who are going through chemo get a stuffed duck, a goody bag with games and a bandana. Gabe the duck has a catheter that can be moved to different areas of his body to help children understand and cope with their treatment. Last year, money raised from the Jacksonville and Greenville stores were enough to purchase more than 30 ducks for the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital.

RuckerJohns has closed its Greenville location. A statement on the restaurant’s Facebook page says, “After 10 years of business in the Greenville area, we are closing our doors. We did not take this decision lightly, but after months of careful consideration it became evident that our time here has run its course. We are so incredibly thankful to the exemplary employees and loyal guests who made this decade so special. We hope to see your familiar faces in one of our other locations from time to time. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for your support.” The Emerald Isle location remains open.
