A yellow card administered to D.H. Conley goalkeeper Conor Montanye proved to be costly for the Vikings in their 3-2 loss to J.H. Rose in boys’ soccer on Tuesday night.
With Conley up 2-1 in the second half, Rose midfielder Jack Host took a free kick from just beyond half field and into the box. Amidst the scuffle in front of Conley’s net, Montanye leapt to make the save, knocking Rose forward Tanner Fields to the ground and drawing a contested yellow card.
Host took the penalty kick, scoring to tie the game at 2-2.
His goal was just the momentum the Rampants needed, as forward Tanner Fields scored his second goal of the night to put the Rampants up 3-2 no less than a minute later.
With only 13 minutes remaining in the game, Conley worked desperately to recover the deficit but fell short as time ran out.
“I felt like tonight we did not bring our A-game,” Conley head coach Shannon McLaughlin said of her team’s performance, “Moving forward in conference, it sets us back again, so we have our work cut out for us.”
As for Rose head coach Joey McAlduff, he had high praise for the grit his team showed in its comeback win.
“I told them that they all have a job to do, and if they all do their job to 100 percent of their capability, we will absolutely be able to compete at the highest level,” he said. “I really think we showed that tonight coming back from a 1-0 deficit to win the game 3-2.”
The first half concluded with Rose (4-3-2, 1-1) and Conley (5-3-1, 1-2) tied at one goal apiece. Cody McLaughlin recorded a goal for the Vikings and Tanner Fields earned the equalizer for the Rampants.
Following a hard-fought 25 minutes in the second half, Conley midfielder Massimo Mannino threaded the ball through the Rose defense to forward Corbin Jefferson, who netted a goal to put the Vikings up 2-1.
Conley will host Franklinton on Sept. 18, and Rose will travel to CB Aycock on Sept. 19.
