Anna Sawyer was this season’s most impressive breakout player.

The freshman batted .570, nailing 53 hits and scoring 40 runs on the year. She also accumulated 40 RBIs. Sawyer’s performance netted her The Daily Reflector’s Batter of the Year award.

Sawyer led her team with a .903 slugging percentage, but she also played tight defense in the outfield, finishing with a .957 fielding percentage with only one error to her name.

“It was definitely a crazy season, especially being a freshman,” Sawyer said. “You walk in and you’re just not used to it. The seniors and juniors have already been through seasons before. It was my first playoff experience on top of my first high school experience. It was very overwhelming, but the team was always there for me.”

Sawyer joined a team with plenty of experience, including returning stars in Madison Bowers, Maggie Craig, Alexis and Lexi Phillips and more, but she had no trouble quickly meshing into the Vikings’ dugout.

“They were all very welcoming,” Sawyer said. “All of them were very nice to me, there’s no drama around the team. Everyone is always someone there for you when you fall. There’s never a bad moment with this team.”

While she has three more seasons to perfect her game Sawyer has one skill she looks to focus on the most.

“My leadership,” she said. “I want to be able to watch how the upperclassmen act and lead the team, and be able to do that myself when I’m in their spot.”
