It wasn’t easy, but D.H. Conley baseball continued its winning ways against rival J.H. Rose this season.

The Vikings took down the Rampants for the third time with a 6-3 win on Friday night in front of enthusiastic fans at Conley in the second round of the 3-A state playoffs. Conley advanced to take on Jacksonville in the third round.

“It’s our experience,” DHC coach Jason Mills said. “We have a big senior class mixed in with some younger guys. We’re happy to get the win, but Rose has a talented team and tonight is going to make them a better team next season.”

Baseball wasn’t the only victorious home squad at D.H. Conley on Friday night. Two other Viking teams picked up second-round playoff wins.

The Vikings blanked Southern Lee 3-0 in girls’ soccer and their softball team won in exciting fashion as well. Freshman Anna Sawyer capped her stellar night with a game-winning single in the eighth inning to beat Orange County 2-1.

Lauren Wiles picked up the win in the circle to help DHC in the low-scoring contest. With the Vikings’ offense struggling, Sawyer tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single before her big moment in extra innings.

“I knew my team had my back and I had theirs,” Sawyer said. “They knew I could get a big hit and it happened. There’s always a way to fight back, even in a tough game.”

In other action Friday, South Central softball advanced to the third round. Ayden-Grifton baseball, Farmville Central softball and Greene Central softball were eliminated.

A four-run fourth inning was the difference for the DHC baseball team. Senior catcher Josh McCarter’s two-run double broke the game open for Conley.

“With two strikes, I had to battle,” McCarter said about his hit. “I had to make something happen and I got something good to swing at. My coaches have helped me out throughout the season in these situations.”

All three Conley teams will host third-round playoff games next week, along with South Central softball in the 4-A bracket.
