Friends and family of four South Central athletes packed the school’s media center Thursday afternoon to watch as they announced their college choices.
Falcons football players Markell Gibbs and Myles White, softball and basketball teammates Amaya Evans and Marissa Roach and volleyball star Courtney Powers all made their decisions official with their signings.
Gibbs, the Falcons’ shutdown defensive back, will join Barton College in 2020. He is looking forward to being part of the school’s history.
“It’s going to be a first-time program and I‘m proud to be part of the school’s history,” Gibbs said. “The facililties are nice, the campus is nice. The coaches showed me love, I showed them love and we’re ready to get it done in 2020.”
White, a vocal leader and fellow defensive back, will join the Fayetteville State Broncos.
“I wouldn't be here without my teammates and coaches,” White said. “I give all the glory to God. I worked very hard and I know it’s paying off. I’m very excited.”
Evans and Roach can be seen together nearly everywhere. Both play for the Falcons softball team and girls basketball team, and they will stick together when they head to Pitt Community College to continue their softball careers.
“I feel great things for them, and I’m happy they get a chance to play at the next level,” Falcons softball coach Cotton Nicholson said. “I just hope they continue to work hard so these kids will get better. They can be excellent ball players if they keep working hard.”
Evans and Roach look forward to continuing the Falcons success through basketball season and onto the diamond before heading to PCC.
“It’s exciting,” Evans said
Powers announced her decision to continue her career at Lenoir Community College.
“Courtney is one of those players who knows what she wants and will work hard to get it,” Falcons volleyball coach Kayla Ruffin said. “She had a big swing and a big heart that we will miss next year.”
The Lancers secured Powers due to her relationship with head coach Lee Avery.
“I really liked him,” Powers said. “I’m really excited to get out there.”
