FARMVILLE - Farmville Central snapped a four-game losing streak with a 40-20 win over the Nash Central on Friday night.
In just one game, the Jaguars successfully ended their own losing streak, prolonged Nash Central’s skid to three games and earned their first home win of the season. Behind the great play from the FC offense and reassurance from the defense, Farmville Central was able to hold on to a win.
Head coach of the Jaguars Scott Gardner believes the tide is turning for his team following the quality victory.
“I liked the fact we never quit. We’ve won one game we’ve been within one score away from a win three different times,” Gardner said. “We found a way to beat a good football team. My team never backed down and I was very proud of them.”
After losing four straight games, the Jaguars were finally able to get back on track for a conference title push. With the offense being led by sophomore quarterback Tayvon Suggs, the Jaguars were able to strike first, setting the tone for the game. Later, Jaguar running back Kelvin Forbes took off for a 68-yard touchdown up the middle to give Farmville Central a 14-7 lead.
The offense for the Jaguars was just getting warmed up. On the following possession, sophomore running back Dontavious Short left the Bulldog defense with a 76-yard touchdown rush of his own. Suggs ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 22-7.
On the defensive side of the ball, East Carolina University commit Keziah Everett was lights out. At the defensive tackle position, Everett made back-to-back key plays to force a punt, sniffing out a screen and sacking the quarterback.
To kick off the second quarter, Forbes scampered for a 56-yard touchdown, digging the Bulldogs a 28-7 hole. With the Jaguars up, the Bulldogs responded with 30-yard touchdown from running back Deante Watson. A failed hail mary from the Bulldogs brought the first half to an end, 28-14.
With 2:27 minutes left in the third quarter Suggs scored a 50-yard touchdown, making the score 34-14 after a missed extra point. On the following kickoff, the Jaguars forced a fumble, recovering the ball in Nash Central territory. Both teams scored once more after the turnover on the kick off, but the game was too far out of reach for the Bulldogs.
Gardner let out a sigh of relief when his team sealed the game with an interception, snapping the losing streak.
“I took pride in seeing us do better,” Gardner said. “It’s fun when you win.”
Next week, it’s back to the drawing board for Farmville Central, as the team will conclude its four-game homestand with a matchup against the North Johnston Panthers on Friday.
