AAC recognizes top defender

East Carolina women’s soccer defender and senior Jayda Hylton-Pelaia was named the American Athletic Conference preseason defensive player of the year on Tuesday, as chosen by the league’s 10 head coaches. ECU also was voted fifth in the AAC preseason poll.

The last Pirate to earn a defensive player of the year award was goalie Amber Campbell, who took the C-USA award at the end of the 2008 season. Hylton-Pelaia is also the first ECU player to earn a spot on the AAC preseason team since Lana Spitler in 2016.

"We are glad the other coaches recognized her for this and we are excited to see what she does this season," coach Jason Hamilton said.

Hylton-Pelaia started all 19 games a season ago, setting new career-highs with two goals and four assists. The Brampton, Ontario, native also was named all-AAC second-team and to the league tournament team.

A: Probably Instagram, because I just like looking at the pictures.
