ECU, Staff reports

Monday, May 13, 2019

A chance to sign another high-level junior college recruit did not come to fruition for East Carolina basketball on Monday night when 6-foot-10, 240-pound Khadim Sy announced on Twitter that he committed to Ole Miss over ECU and Pittsburgh.

Sy, from Daytona (Fla.) State College and a Senegal native, last week trimmed his five choices, which included LSU and Arkansas, to a final three of ECU, Ole Miss and Pitt.

He is projected as an immediate high-impact player, ranking as the third-best junior college prospect in the country this year by 247Sports.com. Fifth in those JUCO rankings is ECU signee Tremont Robinson (6-1, 175), a point guard from Garden City (Kan.) Community College.

Also on Monday night, after Sy’s post, 7-footer Charles Coleman decommitted from Wake Forest. That decision could put the Pirates back in the running to sign the talented big man.

ECU also was in the mix for Daytona State 6-9 forward Doudou Gueye, who last week reportedly signed with Louisiana Lafayette.

Ole Miss is coached by Kermit Davis, who in his first season there led the Rebels to the NCAA tournament this year and a first-round loss for a 20-13 record.

Baseball rankings

After going 3-1 last week, including a midweek win at North Carolina, East Carolina moved up one spot again in each of the major national baseball polls Monday.

Baseball America ranks ECU (39-12) No. 7 in its Top 25 rankings. D1baseball.com has the Pirates at No. 8.

The Pirates, who clinched the American Athletic Conference regular season championship during their weekend series victory at Wichita State and had Alec Burleson named AAC player of the week for the second straight week, were at No. 4 in the important RPI rankings on Monday night.

They are at home all week to finish the regular season, hosting Campbell (No. 64 in RPI) on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. before a three-game series against Memphis (129 RPI) beginning Thursday. Campbell (29-18) defeated ECU, 7-6, on Feb. 20 in Buies Creek.

Bills sign McGhin

The Buffalo Bills announced they signed four players from their weekend rookie minicamp tryout, including former East Carolina offensive lineman Garrett McGhin.

Buffalo’s website stated that McGhin, a former ECU team captain who was versatile on the line at 6-foot-6 and 316 pounds able to play center, guard and tackle, played right tackle during the weekend. The Bills’ roster already features former Pirate star receiver Zay Jones.

Track completes AAC meet

Sophomore Alyssa Sandy earned a silver medal on the final day of the AAC outdoor track and field championships in Wichita, Kan., turning in a time of 13.70 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles while ECU classmate Brooke Stith took fourth place in the race.

Sandy and two other Pirates — Grace Sullivan, steeplechase and Hakeem Horton, long jump — came home with silver medals. Senior Kourtney Edwards-Campbell, who finished 11th in the discus a year ago, improved to third place with a mark of 50.02 meters for bronze.

ECU’s women finished in eighth place, and the men were ninth.
