UCLA again proved its billing as the No. 1-ranked college baseball team in the country with a sweep of No. 8 East Carolina in Los Angeles, completing the sweep late Saturday night with a 3-0 win over ECU.

The third game was the only in the series in which the Pirates (25-10), who were held to four hits, did not hold a lead. UCLA’s Ryan Garcia (4-0) fired seven scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts and three hits yielded with two walks.

ECU dropped to 2-10 all-time in games against No. 1 teams.

It marked a third series against a top-10 opponent for UCLA (27-6) during a five-weekend span. The Bruins went 7-2 combined in those games against Oregon State, Stanford and ECU.

Pirate starter Jake Kuchmaner (3-1) gave up two runs in 5.1 innings. Bryant Packard and Alec Burleson each went 2-for-4 with a double for the Pirates’ four hits.

Tennis adds to streak

After a thrilling four-hour win on Friday, East Carolina women’s tennis completed its regular season on a 22-match win streak the next day inside the ECU Indoor Tennis Center with a much more comfortable 5-2 win over Connecticut.

The Pirates (22-2) honored Annija Veinsteina and standout Celia Ruiz on senior day. Veinsteina lost her singles match and teamed with Hsia Ho Chiao to win in doubles, and Ruiz won in doubles along with taking her No. 2 singles match by a 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (9-7) score.

First-round action at the American Athletic Conference tournament in Orlando, Fla., will begin Wednesday.

“It’s just been one of those years where everything has come together,” coach Tom Morris said in a release. “It’s very hard to go out there and play well every time and this team has figured out how to do that. I’m just really, really proud of this group.”

Top singles player Lisa Hofbauer clinched the 4-3 win over Cincinnati on Friday, when the match came down to a tiebreak battle between Hofbauer and Antonella Bramato. Hofbauer led 4-1 and it was 5-5 before two crucial points completed her 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory to set off a Pirate celebration.

“We just keep winning at the places we need to when we need to,” Morris said Friday.

ECU finished the regular season with a 5-0 record against AAC opponents.

Softball wins finale

East Carolina stopped a 12-game losing streak and grabbed its second American Athletic Conference win of this season when it defeated Tulsa 1-0 in eight innings on Sunday at the ECU Softball Stadium.

ECU (20-23, 2-10) won its first game over Tulsa (28-14, 9-3) since 2014, two days after the Golden Hurricane swept a doubleheader with 8-1 and 5-1 victories.

Tate McClellan’s RBI single with one out in the Pirate eighth scored Rachel McCollum to take the series finale. McCollum and Logan Wood singled to get on base for McClellan.

Erin Poepping provided a huge lift in the circle, tossing her first career extra-inning complete-game shutout. She struck out four batters, walked one and allowed 10 hits.

Lacrosse loss

East Carolina battled in the first half against a ranked women’s lacrosse team for the second straight outing, but could not keep up in the second as No. 18 Florida won 20-10 over the Pirates.

ECU (5-10, 0-3) is still looking for its first American Athletic Conference victory, while the Gators (9-6, 3-0) are undefeated in conference play. Brittany Borchers led ECU with three points on two goals and an assist.

PCC updates

Pitt Community College baseball was not able to play any of its weekend games scheduled against Paul D. Camp Community College because of inclement weather in Winterville.

In softball, the Bulldogs swept a doubleheader Friday against Paul Camp with a 7-6 loss followed by an 11-1 win in five innings. PCC (17-4) is now 12-1 in Region X action.
