East Carolina football’s attempt for Nate Harvey to gain an extra year of eligibility for this season was denied by the NCAA, first-year coach Mike Houston and the Pirates announced Saturday.
Harvey was seeking a request for medical hardship, based on an abbreviated season at Georgia Military College because of injury.
He participated in ECU’s first spring practice Friday but did not practice Saturday morning after the Pirates received an official denial from the NCAA on Friday night. Harvey joined Houston in a post-practice address to reporters Saturday morning.
“When I had the opportunity to take the job I had no idea who Nate Harvey was and so over the last three months, I have had the pleasure of getting to know him on a daily basis,” Houston said. “What an incredible young man. We respect the decision by the NCAA, but at the same time, we are disappointed.”
Harvey transferred to ECU from Georgia Military College in the spring of 2017 and last year his 14.5 sacks ranked third in the nation and tied the American Athletic Conference single-season record.
He will now seek an opportunity to play professionally.
