East Carolina basketball’s 73-57 loss to Wichita State in the first round of the American Athletic Conference tournament in Memphis, Tenn., late Thursday night put an end to the Pirates’ second straight 10-win season.
There was no upset tourney run for the undersized and outmanned Pirates (10-21), who trailed 39-27 at halftime and saw the deficit grow from there. The final lead for No. 11 seed ECU was 10-8 during the first seven minutes.
Six-seed Wichita (18-13) advanced to play Temple in the quarterfinals in the FedEx Forum.
Pirate senior Isaac Fleming had 12 points and a game-high seven assists in his final outing. Jayden Gardner scored 16 points to complete the highest-scoring freshman season in ECU history.
It was 27-20 Shockers when they made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to open up a 33-20 advantage with 3:00 until halftime. WSU shot 15-of-30 from the field in the opening half.
The Shockers finished with a 44-32 rebounding edge and 34-20 advantage in points in the paint.
