A couple of left-handers will serve as East Carolina baseball’s first two starting pitchers of the season.
ECU announced Monday that its initial weekend rotation versus Radford will begin with lefties Alec Burleson and Jake Agnos, on Friday and Saturday, respectively, before junior right-hander Tyler Smith gets the nod Sunday.
The Pirates’ season opener is Friday at Clark-LeClair Stadium at 4 p.m. Game times for Saturday and Sunday are 2 p.m. and 1, respectively.
Burleson emerged last year as a two-way standout as a pitcher and hitter. He finished the season in the weekend rotation, including starting in a 4-2 loss to South Carolina during the NCAA Greenville Regional. SC went on to win the regional.
“It was a lot of fun pitching in the regional and just being put in the rotation meant I kind of had to mature as a pitcher a lot,” Burleson, who pitched 54 innings with a 3.33 ERA and earned the American Athletic Conference rookie pitcher of the year award, said at media day. “I had to be able to know scouting reports and stuff like that, but that’s what I wanted to do and I wanted to be in the rotation. I’m glad I got the opportunity.”
This leaves Gavin Williams, Trey Benton, Juke Kuchmaner and Carter Spivey as lead options to start midweek games and in the bullpen.
Agnos has 24 career starts. Smith enjoyed a tremendous sophomore campaign in 2018, posting a 7-1 record with one save and a 1.78 ERA.
