The East Carolina athletics office of compliance is leading an internal review into the school’s women’s basketball program.

An ECU spokesman said Wednesday that there is no further comment until the review is complete. It is unclear if potential NCAA violations are involved or not. The Pirates’ official website, ecupirates.com, describes part of the compliance department’s role as monitoring various rules and regulations.

“East Carolina University is committed and obligated to the principle of institutional control in operating its athletics programs. This task is accomplished by operating in accordance with NCAA, the American Athletic Conference and university rules and regulations,” the website states. “The charge of the ECU's athletics office of compliance is to not only educate, monitor and verify NCAA rules compliance for the athletic department, but also work collectively with the institution's various constituency groups to ensure that policies and procedures are implemented to ensure that we are maintaining institutional control.”

The Pirates, who went 16-15 last season for their first winning campaign since going 22-11 in 2014-15, spent part of the summer conducting offseason workouts and youth camps under ninth-year coach Heather Macy. The team is slated to begin its new season Nov. 6 against Maryland-Eastern Shore in Minges Coliseum.

One of baseball’s many adages is that good teams need to be strong “up the middle,” a reference that focuses on important defensive positions from catcher to middle infielders at shortstop and second base and then into the outfield with a center fielder.
