The East Carolina athletics office of compliance is leading an internal review into the school’s women’s basketball program.

An ECU spokesman said Wednesday that there is no further comment until the review is complete. It is unclear if potential NCAA violations are involved or not. The Pirates’ official website, ecupirates.com, describes part of the compliance department’s role as monitoring various rules and regulations.

“East Carolina University is committed and obligated to the principle of institutional control in operating its athletics programs. This task is accomplished by operating in accordance with NCAA, the American Athletic Conference and university rules and regulations,” the website states. “The charge of the ECU's athletics office of compliance is to not only educate, monitor and verify NCAA rules compliance for the athletic department, but also work collectively with the institution's various constituency groups to ensure that policies and procedures are implemented to ensure that we are maintaining institutional control.”

The Pirates, who went 16-15 last season for their first winning campaign since going 22-11 in 2014-15, spent part of the summer conducting offseason workouts and youth camps under ninth-year coach Heather Macy. The team is slated to begin its new season Nov. 6 against Maryland-Eastern Shore in Minges Coliseum.

One thing that stands out with first-year coach Joe Dooley about the East Carolina basketball team’s big men is their potential.

The Pirates are not going to overpower many teams in the post — they’re tallest player is 6-foot-9 freshman Rico Quinton — and they are young, but…

It was easy to think back to East Carolina football’s successful run in Conference USA during Saturday night’s game against Houston at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

The first reminder was Houston being the visiting team. The Cougars occupied the same visiting sideline Dec. 5, 2009, for a…

Here are The Daily Reflector’s updated in-state college football power rankings:

1. N.C. State

Record: 5-0.

Why No. 1? Because the Wolfpack is undefeated. The game many…

These three questions appeared in the Pirate Gameday section previewing the East Carolina-Houston football game, which ended as a 42-20 win for Houston that could have been more lopsided if not for a few late touchdowns by the Pirates.

Speaking of those touchdowns ...

A week-long theme of a possible new-look East Carolina football offense did not come to fruition Saturday night against Houston at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

On a night when ECU had its first announced crowd of less than 30,000 since the finale of the 2005 season, the Pirates used all three of their…

East Carolina’s football offense started too slow and delivered too little again on Saturday night in a 42-20 beating at the hands of visiting Houston.

From third-down miscues to an inability to reach the red zone to a touchdown drought that stretched seven full quarters, ECU (2-4, 0-3…

On Saturday night, East Carolina passed the halfway point in the college football season amid the same uncertainty that has loomed around Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium the last few years.

The Pirates, in a make-or-break season for third-year head coach Scottie Montgomery, lost 42-20 to Houston for a 2-4…

Q: You lead the Pirates with 7.5 sacks this season. Does one stand out the most?

A: Not really, but there are a lot of team memories. That win against Old Dominion (on Sept. 29 in which ECU totaled nine sacks), just that whole game was a lot of fun.

Q: What is your favorite holiday?

A: Halloween,…
