A 52-year-old Greenville man was shot and killed early Thursday in the 1700 block of South Pitt Street, the Greenville Police Department reported.

Leroy Antonio Barnes of Greenville was found shortly after 12:30 a.m. suffering from a gunshot wound in the residential area south of Howell Street near the Pitt Street Mini Mart.

Officers and EMS personnel attempted life-saving measures, however, Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene, a police department news release said.

Although still early in the investigation, detectives have reason to believe Barnes was likely targeted and this was not a random incident, the release said. They are following up on numerous leads at this time, the release said.

An autopsy for Barnes is scheduled for Friday.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call the Greenville Police Department (252) 329-4315 or Crime Stoppers (252) 758-7777.

Caller may remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.
