Winterville man killed in crash after crossing centerline, hitting truck

A 49-year-old Winterville man who died in a head-on collision was traveling 45 mph at the time of the crash, according to information obtained from a State Highway Patrol report. 

The crash took place at 1:57 p.m. on Oct. 24 on Forlines Road near South Central High School.

Ronnie Earl Cox, 49, of 2448 Grimes Street, Winterville, was traveling eastbound at 45 mph on Forlines Road in his 2015 Toyota Corolla when he crossed the centerline and struck a 2019 Dodge Ram pickup truck being driven by David Hill of 1305 Barnbrook, Antioch. Hill was traveling 40 mph at the time of impact. 

Troopers said two passengers inside Hill’s truck sustained minor injuries and were transported by Ayden EMS to Vidant Medical Center.  Hill was not injured in the crash.  

Cox’s Toyota sustained $8,000 and Hill’s Dodge sustained $10,000 in damages.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation and no further information was available.  

The wreck is among 20 other crashes that the State Highway Patrol investigated recently in Pitt County, according to reports available between Oct. 22 and Oct. 28. Wrecks involving deer and other animals are not included.
