Someone spray-painted racially-charged and anti-law enforcement statements on several cars and an office building belonging to the N.C. Department of Public Safety, the Greenville Police Department reported on Tuesday.

The incident occurred overnight on Sunday at the office at the Greenville office of the N.C. Department of Probation and Parole, 214 S. Pitt St., a news release said.

Black spray paint was used to vandalize four vehicles and the building, the police department reported. Messages painted on the cars include “black power” and “**ck 911.”

DPS spokeswoman Sonja Bennett said district managers informed her of the vandalism onTuesday morning and that the incident is a first for her.

“We haven't experienced anything like this before,” Bennett said. “We take every precaution possible when it comes to protecting our vehicles. They were parked in the purview of security cameras. It's never a good thing when we're having to face someone vandalizing and devaluing our property.”

Bennett said that the four damaged vehicles have been sent to local body shops for repair and so far, operations have not been affected by the incident.

“We're asking if anyone has seen anything that they please contact the authorities. Our operations have not been stalled by this incident and this will not have any direct effect on how we serve the public,” Bennett said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Greenville Police Department at 329-4321 or CrimeStoppers at 758-7777.

Reward money is available for information that leads to an arrest.
