Saturday, October 6, 2018

A man threatened a clerk with a knife when she tried to stop him from leaving a Walmart with a cart containing a television and garden hose on Wednesday, according to a report to the Greenville Police Department.

The incident occurred about 10:20 p.m. at 210 S.W. Greenville Blvd., the report said. A man was pushing a shopping cart out of the store without paying for a Flexon brand garden hose valued at $11.88 and an Element 39-inch television valued at $198.

When a clerk at the store approached him, the man pulled a pocket knife and continued to exit the store, police department spokeswoman Kristen Hunter said.

Officers reviewed surveillance footage upon arrival at the scene and identified a suspect, who was arrested later that night on Imperial Street, Hunter said. The stolen items were recovered.

John Michael Hunter, 41, 604 Griffin St., was charged with communicating threats, robbery with a dangerous weapon, larceny by anti inventory device and two counts of larceny. He was jailed at Pitt County Detention Center in lieu of $145,000 bail.
